Could someone tell me if all 73 combats have a spin on oil filter? I can not find one on mine. I was told that Norton went to these in late 72. Could it be that my bike has an older motor on it.The engine number matches the frame number which is 2093XX. I have had this in storage since 1999 and plan to restore it and could use advice on a good parts supplier.
Thanks,Terry
Yours may not have had a filter. It was mentioned in the 1972 brochure but mine numbered 2005** didn't. It's not a question of whether the engine had one, because it's completely external.
It is a good idea to fit one and it can be plumbed into the return oil line on any model.
If you buy a standard type filter housing, the only mod apart from new oil line is to drill two holes in the right hand side of the gearbox cradle, below and behind the swinging arm pivot.(Pretty sure you'll have to dismantle to do this)
If you can find a drilled cradle to take measurements from, it will be easier as you want it as high as possible to avoid it being clouted by the mainstand spring but low enough not to be whacked by the swing-arm on full travel !
Parts suppliers depend on your location. Whereabouts are you ?
Thanks for the good advice Rich,I will install one during my restore.I am from north central Ohio if there is any good parts suppliers near or I have no problem with mail ordering.I posted another message on the same subject because I didn,t think that my original message was posted so please disregard it.(new user)
Thanks again, Terry52
Hi Terry,
I'm an expat Englishman living in eastern Belgium so I'm afraid someone else is going to have to help you with the parts suppliers !
If you're considering ordering parts from the UK then a subscription to "Old Bike Mart" might be a good idea. I'm not a great fan of their editorial style but most UK traders advertise there ('cause it's cheap !)
Rich
Hey Terry,
You have lots of options for parts. Domi Racer/Accessory Mart in Cincinnati, Xanders Brit Bikes in Xennia, Walridge Motors over the lake in Ontario, and many many more. Definatley join the NONO's (Northern Ohio Norton Owners), and you'll find a wealth of knowledge and fun in Nortoneering. Do a web search and all of these places will come up.
Have fun with your Nort, Brian
Hey Terry, just got a 71 750 on the road and its runs great! No oil filter on this one. Looks like 72 had an external filter as has already been mentioned. Baxter Cycle OH (I think, check baxter.com anyway) are cool folks. MAP Cycle of Florida, mail order, has a cool cartridge filter that is best mounted on the from downtubes. You can not only get ease of filter changes, but a little cool air over the filter housing as you thrash along the byways. about $50 bucks with an extra cartridge. easy to install too. Happy riding and wrenching AL
