Don't worry, you haven't done anything wrong ! The top nuts are attached to the top of the damper rods.
The best thing to do is to put a block under the front of the frame then lift the front wheel a few inches and put a block under there as well. This will raise the damper rods and springs along with the top nuts. You will then see a lock nut under the top nut.
A fairly slim spanner is needed to hold this while you crack the top nut undone.
In order to get the new oil in, you will need to lower the front wheel again. There is no danger of the whole lot dropping inside as it remains attached to the bottom of the slider. Don't remove the locknut though or the damper rod will drop down inside the spring and you'll have to dismantle to get it up again.
You are now about to discover the delights of trickling oil down past the springs to refill the legs. It takes ages ! Best advice is to make sure you've got a beverage handy because there's lots of waiting.
Good luck !
Rich.
