Hello,I was servicing my 72 750 Commando and decided to replace the fork oil well I loosen the chrome top bolt and it backed out about an inch or a little more and then just began to spin without rising anymore I figured ok end of thread I try to pull it up and unscrew at the same time and nothing but spining I thought maybe stripped or something so I try the other side and same thing I dont want to pry on it more than I have already I dont see how taper at top of fork tube would be the cause anyone with a little info would be greatly apperciated thanks Ed
Don't worry, you haven't done anything wrong ! The top nuts are attached to the top of the damper rods.
The best thing to do is to put a block under the front of the frame then lift the front wheel a few inches and put a block under there as well. This will raise the damper rods and springs along with the top nuts. You will then see a lock nut under the top nut.
A fairly slim spanner is needed to hold this while you crack the top nut undone.
In order to get the new oil in, you will need to lower the front wheel again. There is no danger of the whole lot dropping inside as it remains attached to the bottom of the slider. Don't remove the locknut though or the damper rod will drop down inside the spring and you'll have to dismantle to get it up again.
You are now about to discover the delights of trickling oil down past the springs to refill the legs. It takes ages ! Best advice is to make sure you've got a beverage handy because there's lots of waiting.
Good luck !
Yes sir,Rich your the man it worked great thank you I screwed in the first bolt before undoing the second bolt that didnt help I just purchased a manual Ive put it off too long and yes I did take your advice and chilled a beverage I think that was an important step. Thanks again ,Ed
