Hi Bruce,
Sorry can't comment on why the front mount is offset. But, my 74 Commando also has had a slight veer to the left (actually the bars want to go right which makes the bike go left). I initially tried careful alignment with strings and laser levels to no avail, I even tried intentionally misaligning the rear wheel just to see if it made any difference, it didn't. Last winter I had it on the rack and strung plumb lines from the ceiling down past the rims. By doing this I found that the wheels and frame each were in a different vertical plane. By installiing a tie-rod headsteady (homemade and a real beauty) I was able to pull/push the rear wheel into vertical alignment with the frame, this helped but the front wheel is still slightly out (maybe its one of those Italian frames?). The frame looks perfectly straight and undamaged, go figuere???
Anyway, I recently read somewhere that there was a tech article that suggested the problem of left veer can be helped by swapping the forks side for side (IE now the disk and calipher are on the left side). I checked through the Tech Digest but didn't happen to see it. Does anybody know where that article came from or had any experience doing so?
just wondering,
GB G.B.
