"Commando Triple Trees"
|
Greetings all: more newbie questions, I'm afraid. So thanks in advance for your patience.
I have my 71 Commando stripped down to the frame and the triple trees were a mess; threads on the steering tube were very bad, I had to cut off the nut. The good news is that this is about the only part that is significantly fouled up as I begin the rebuild job.
so here's my question: how is the steering tube connected to the upper fork yolk? is it threaded or welded? and if threaded, where can I get a new one? Would I be better off just trying to get a used one from Ebay or wherever?
I did a search but didn't see any references to this problem.
thanks to all:
Karl Hoyt

The stem has knurling on it and also circlip. You would not take it apart as any part of servicing the front end.
The bottom triple tree comes off and the stem pushes out, going up through the bearings.
68-70 domi style are opposite.
73-75 850 have a different angle and can be destinguished by an "ANG" on the bottom of the casting.

Thanks, Dave: I was just looking at a way to maybe save the fork yolks with a crummy stem: I think either the ebay and or going for a used one is the way to go: 3 days to go and I think I'll have a new set anyhow.

Update, I scored a set of tripletrees on e-bay, so I'm back in the restoration saddle again: thanks for your feedback, all.
