Hi all, finally got the model 7 dommie going and on the road, thanks to all who helped with advice..However it has a vibration in the front forks under light to medium braking and I am wondering if it may be a slightly out of round drum or if it may be something more sinister, given the drum was remachined etc etc prior to rims being relaced. Anyone able to shed some light will be greatly appreciated...Sam

I always thought you skim the brake drum AFTER you lace and true the rim? Pull the brake plate out and put a dial indicator. All will be revealed when you scan the surface.

Yes Definitely skim after the rim is laced and trued. The difficulty is tracking down a lath with enough throw. Did you apply the brake as you were tightening the axle ? It is possible the brake plate could be off centre. If the front hub brake plate etc has been built up from bits it can be a bit of a mission to get all the lateral clearances right. Basically you just have to use common sense and keep trying. You could also check wheel and steering head bearings for play. Are the brake shoes new and have they been skimmed on a centre ? Another one can be a poor fit of the brake anchor into the slot on the slider. Probaly not tyre fitting because that would show up under normal driving. John

Hi Sam, I have been taking complete (with tires) wheels down to a local clutch and brake shop, and they usually take off very little meat to give smooth action. I'm always getting good-natured ribbing from them, like "a good wheel builder can adjust those spokes, AND get the brake perfect", but they do it all the time, not a big problem. Seems like it's about $20. Good luck! Don W.
