" Norton Commando"
|
Want to verify year and type . Just purchased and have found the following numbers, on frame 127923, on the engine case 20m3/127923.
I was told that it is a 1972 Norton 750 cc Cammando. Any information would be greatly appreciated, as i would like to restore the bike
as close to original as I can.

My 68 Fastback has serial number 127945. Very close.... Rear distributor, tack drive off right side cam end. Round tank badges on tank and tail piece.

Wow, what a find. First year Commandos are way more rare than 72's. Check the gear box case, it should have a number also. I don't know about the early ones, but the later ones had matching frame, engine and gear box #'s.
Restore can mean many things, restore to rideable condition, restore to personal cosmetic taste all the way to full on concourse condition.
I say this because the very first Commandos had a few problems, primarily the frame. The INOA Tech Digest is adamant about replacing/repairing the frame. The fix was a horizontal member connecting the backbone to the lower part of the neck where the double down tubes start. This forms a triangulated section. Chances are yours has been corrected. If it hasn't, you should look into this if you plan on riding it. If you plan on showing it only, it may be way cool to have an unmodified original. I'd be curious to hear back if it has been modified or not. Mike

From resposes recieved the bike is a 1968 MK1 commando ,I found the matching frame/engine number on the gearbox. The mod to the neck area has been done. There has been a shoddy repair done in the area of the neck where the downtubes start. I have stripped the bike to bare frame, will sandblast frame and remove the old repair and do a better repair and go from there. what do you think?

I have a '69, replaced the frame with a later type. Try to copy the improvement as close as possible, and unless you are into cosmic energy (like me), do NOT adapt a magneto...fiddling in that area with a hot engine is freaky enough.
